Developing Potential Through Chess in School

We will devise a program of introducing chess in European schools so that we should be capable of achieving great results. Appropriate printed, software and teaching materials must be designed and the teacher base developed. Similarly, parents and volunteers must be tapped to contribute in whatever way is beneficial for this objective.

We will therefore set up a dedicated Commission for Chess in Schools to develop appropriate learning materials (video, internet, printed) as well as supporting teaching materials (course material, software, sets, demo boards) and be accountable to the Board for the introduction and support of chess in schools programmes in all 54 ECU member Federations.

Equal Opportunity

ECU will assist all nations across Europe by ensuring that organisers offer free hosting for one female and one male in the individual European Championships. In this way, participation of all member Federations will be made easier and the Championships will be truly European. All Federations will be offered a website through a WCMS (web content management system) which will allow member Federations to update news and articles, maintain membership data and subscriptions, set up tournament sub domains on their site, forum, video and photo galleries and even academies.

Human Resources

humanresourcesE.C.U. must ensure that professional and volunteer posts are strategically aligned to meet development objectives. It must also make sure that professional staff remuneration reflects the level of responsibility and market rates whilst establishing a professional staff development programme.

The staff will be responsible for the daily administration of ECU offices under the guidance of the ECU General Secretary whilst also supporting member Federations through regular updates and information and if required support for internet based services. ECU will invest in this area to also support the training and education of all support staff in ECU organised events and FIDE events when required.

Governance, Operational and Ethical Policies

We will establish clear remits and code of conduct for all the E.C.U. Board and Commission members, professional staff and volunteers to ensure that all decisions and actions are taken in a professional manner.

The Board will commission internal and external reviews on a continuous basis on event management, ethics, code of conduct, child protection policies, disciplinary action and complaints, bidding procedures, transparent selection criteria and development guidelines.

It will promote league / club competitions as well as try and assist lesser developed countries in upgrading their infrastructure and increasing the number of trainers and arbiters.

Arbiters Commission

The professional support for arbiters under the auspices of FIDE, will be supported by a dedicated commissions for this critical function. Apart from ensuring the technical advancement of arbiters, the commissions will be responsible for ensuring fair rotation of arbiters in all ECU and FIDE events.

Trainers Commission

teacherAdditionally, the ECU will establish a Trainers Commission which will liaise with its FIDE counterpart but focus on the needs and requirements of the individual ECU member Federations. ECU will organise a number of seminars throughout the year to improve and increase the number of trainers across Europe. The E.C.U.
